Why wont edges delete in maya?
Try switching to Vertex (Vertices) mode and going to each end of the edge and merging the vertices (Edit Mesh > Merge). You may need to repeat this process if several edges converge to the same area. I’ve had this happen, and believe it was related to a miss-click with the modeling toolkit.

Why are there no vertex dots in edit mode?
Drawing errors happen mostly due to driver problems and sometimes also on older GPUs. In my experience GPUs with shared memory sometimes do weird things once their memory limit is reached. If the problems occur often it might help playing around with the settings in “File” -> “User Preferences” -> “System”.
