What is site template and site definition?
Site Definitions are stored on the hard drive of the SharePoint front end servers. Site Templates are created by users as a copy of a site they have configured and modified so that they do not have to recreate lists, libraries, views and columns every time they need a new instance of a site.
SharePoint site templates are prebuilt definitions designed around a particular business need. A custom site template is a powerful feature that allows you to create a solution and then share that solution with your peers, the broader organization, or outside organizations.
How to save a site as a template?
Save a site as a template to the solutions gallery Navigate to the top-level site of your site collection. Click Settings, and then click Site Settings. In the Site Actions section, click Save site as a template.

How big does a site template need to be?
When you use the site template in a different site collection, those features must be available and activated for the site template to work. The size of the template should not beyond 50 MB site template limit. When you Save a list as a template it will save as a .wsp file will store it in the site collection’s Solution Gallery.
Download the site template from the solutions gallery to a file Navigate to the top-level site of your site collection. Click Settings, and then click Site Settings. In the Web Designer Galleries section, click Solutions. If it’s necessary to activate the solution, select it, and in the Commands group, click Activate.
