What’s the difference between SharePoint Server and Microsoft 365?
The SharePoint Server 2019 modern experience is similar to the experience in SharePoint in Microsoft 365. The main difference is Hub sites aren’t available in SharePoint Server. We do recommend that you use the same process as in SharePoint in Microsoft 365, create site collections for each unit of work instead of creating subsites.
You can scale up content databases that support a site collection. You can also scale-out a content database at the web application level to support additional site collections. A site collection can exist in only one content database, but one content database can host the content for multiple site collections.
How are hub sites different from SharePoint Server?
The main difference is Hub sites aren’t available in SharePoint Server. We do recommend that you use the same process as in SharePoint in Microsoft 365, create site collections for each unit of work instead of creating subsites. This will make it easier when migrating your SharePoint farm to SharePoint in Microsoft 365.
With SharePoint online, all the “back end” parts of SharePoint are looked after at Microsoft’s end. With SharePoint Online, users don’t have to think about things like servers, architecture, or resources, as this is all taken care of by the vendor.

What makes a company a tenant in SharePoint Online?
It’s basically the idea that if you build a large apartment building (a cloud service), then you can rent to lots of tenants (companies) and everyone benefits from the large investment in infrastructure in the cloud/apartment building. Site collections, on the other hand, are slices of your company’s SharePoint Online account.
According to Gartner’s most recent Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms, SharePoint is a leader in the market, with the report stating that “though there are a handful of platforms that nudge out Microsoft in terms of vision, none can rival SharePoint’s ability to execute and deliver a complete product.”
