How are global variables stored?
In C, global variables are stored with the program code. I.e. the space to hold them is part of the object file (either in the data or bss section), instead of being allocated during execution (to either the stack or heap).
What memory stores global variables?
Data segment
Data segment: contains global variables (i.e. objects with static linkage). Subdivided in read-only data (such as string constants) and uninitialized data (“BSS”). Stack segment: contains the dynamic memory for the program, i.e. the free store (“heap”) and the local stack frames for all the threads.
Are global variables stored on the heap?
The heap is a memory used by programming languages to store global variables. By default, all global variable are stored in heap memory space. It supports Dynamic memory allocation. The heap is not managed automatically for you and is not as tightly managed by the CPU.
Where are global variables stored in the stack?
heap
Anyways, it says “If you’re familiar with operating system architecture, you might be interested to know that local variables and function arguments are stored on the stack, while global and static variables are stored on the heap.”
Where are global variables stored in a computer?
Storage for global variables is allocated in your computer’s virtual memory by the OS linker/loader at the time your program is loaded. The actual global variable storage is somewhere in the physical memory hierarchy (cache, RAM memory, SSD/HD backing storage, etc.), as mapped by the cache and VM system.
What is the default storage class for global variables?
The default storage duration is static, but default linkage is external. You’re not the only one to find it a bit confusing. The C Book (always a good reference) says: “You’ll probably find the interactions between these various elements to be both complex and confusing: that’s because they are!”
Where can I find global static variables in C?
Global static variables can be accessed anywhere in the program. By default, they are assigned the value 0 by the compiler. register: This storage class declares register variables which have the same functionality as that of the auto variables.
Where are local variables and static variables stored?
If you’re familiar with operating system architecture, you might be interested to know that local variables and function arguments are stored on the stack, while global and static variables are stored on the heap. This is definitely an error in the book.
