Is it better to pass by reference or by pointer?
Use pass-by-reference if you want to modify the argument value in the calling function. The difference between pass-by-reference and pass-by-pointer is that pointers can be NULL or reassigned whereas references cannot. Use pass-by-pointer if NULL is a valid parameter value or if you want to reassign the pointer.
Is an array passed as a pointer?
Since an array is passed as a pointer, the array’s memory is not copied. The function uses the memory of the same array that is passed to it, and can change what is in that memory.
When should you pass a pointer?
You pass a pointer if the function wants a pointer (obviously), or if you want to signify an optional output parameter – since a reference always has to bind to something, but a pointer can be null.
Is C array a pointer?
An array is a pointer, and you can store that pointer into any pointer variable of the correct type.
Are arrays passed by value C++?
However, arrays in C cannot be passed by value to a function, and we can modify the contents of the array from within the callee function. So, when we pass an array in a function, it would decay into a pointer regardless of whether the parameter is declared as int[] or not.
Why is a pointer with a value of 0 Not a valid address?
It’s not even an address abstraction, it’s the constant specified by the C standard and the compiler can translate it to some other number as long as it makes sure it never equals a “real” address, and equals other null pointers if 0 is not the best value to use for the platform.
Do you need to pass an array pointer to a function?
You do not need to take a pointer to the array in order to pass it to an array-generating function, because arrays already decay to pointers when you pass them to functions. Simply make the parameter int a [], and use it as a regular array inside the function, the changes will be made to the array that you have passed in.
Why is the name of an array a pointer?
The fact that an array’s name is a pointer allows easy passing of arrays in and out of functions. When we pass the array in by its name, we are passing the address of the first array element. So, the expected parameter is a pointer. Example:
Do you need to pass the size of an array to a function?
If you make your function a template, you can do it and you don’t even need to pass the size of the array (because it is automatically deduced): You do not need to take a pointer to the array in order to pass it to an array-generating function, because arrays already decay to pointers when you pass them to functions.
When to pass an array by its name?
So, the expected parameter is a pointer. Example: When an array is passed into a function (by its name), any changes made to the array elements do affect the original array, since only the array address is copied (not the array elements themselves). This Swap function allows an array to be passed in by its name only.
