What is the purpose of the Self method?
The purpose of self would be to hold the reference for instance methods and for us to have explicit access to that reference.
What does it mean to return self?
Returning self from a method simply means that your method returns a reference to the instance object on which it was called. This can sometimes be seen in use with object oriented APIs that are designed as a fluent interface that encourages method cascading.
What does return self do in Python?
If a method can fail, it should return success or failure or raise an exception to be handled. One caveat is that if you use the return self idiom, Python will allow you to assign all your methods to variables and you might think you are getting a data result or a list when you are actually getting the object.
What is the purpose of class methods?
A class method is a method which is bound to the class and not the object of the class. They have the access to the state of the class as it takes a class parameter that points to the class and not the object instance. It can modify a class state that would apply across all the instances of the class.
Do I need to return self Python?
It will stand out to someone looking through your code to see the interface, and you don’t have to explicitly return self from every function (which could be annoying if you have multiple exit points).
What’s the benefit of returning self from a method?
I have already seen this question return self problem but I can’t understand what the benefit is of return self? Returning self from a method simply means that your method returns a reference to the instance object on which it was called.
What’s the purpose of returning self in Python?
Suffice it to say, returning self is the definitive OO way to craft class methods, but Python allows for multiple return values, tuples, lists, objects, primitives, or None. Chaining, as they put it, is merely putting the answer to the last operation into the next, and the runtime of Python can optimize that kind of thing.
When do you call a class it returns a value?
When you call a class object (like MyClass () or list ()), it returns an instance of that class. (list is really a type and not a class, but I am simplifying a bit here.) When you print an object (i.e. get a string representation of an object), that object’s __str__ or __repr__ magic method is called and the returned value printed.
What does MyClass ( ) return in Java?
MyClass () returns a MyClass instance. If you want a list instance, just get a list instance. If the issue instead is what do these objects look like when you print them or look at them in the console, then create a __str__ and __repr__ method which represents them as you want them to be represented.
