What are hyper-parameters and how do we set values of hyper-parameters?
A model hyperparameter is a configuration that is external to the model and whose value cannot be estimated from data.
- They are often used in processes to help estimate model parameters.
- They are often specified by the practitioner.
- They can often be set using heuristics.
How do you do cross validation with Hyperparameter tuning?
K- Fold Cross Validation For Parameter Tuning
- Split the dataset into k equal partitions.
- Use first fold as testing data and union of other folds as training data and calculate testing accuracy.
- Repeat step 1 and step 2.
- Take the average of these test accuracy as the accuracy of the sample.
When to use cross validation for hyperparameter tuning?
For what I know, and correct me if I am wrong, the use of cross-validation for hyperparameter tuning is not advisable when I have a huge dataset. So, in this case it is better to split the data in training, validation and test set; and then perform the hyperparameter tuning with the validation set.
What’s the best way to tune a hyperparameter?
One possible way is to manually tune the hyperparameters using educated guesses as starting points, changing some hyperparameters, training the model, evaluating its performance and repeating these steps until we are happy with the performance. That sounds like an unnecessarily tedious approach and it is.
How does random search work in hyperparameter tuning?
Random Search means that instead of trying out all possible combinations of hyperparameters (which would be 27,216 combinations in our example) the algorithm randomly chooses a value for each hyperparameter from the grid and evaluates the model using that random combination of hyperparameters.
How to use scikit-learn for hyperparameter tuning?
With scikit-learn ‘s helper functions, I just split the data into two parts. Use GridSearchCV with one part and then at the end using the best parameters (stored in the attribute best_estimator_) run a sanity check with the second part.
