What is neural density estimation?
The task of density estimation is to estimate p(·) based on a set of independently and identically distributed data points {xi}Ni=1drawn from this density. Autoregression-based neural density estimators decompose the density into the product of conditional densities based on probability chain rule p(x)=∏ip(xi|x1:i−1).
What is the meaning of probability density function?
Probability density function (PDF) is a statistical expression that defines a probability distribution (the likelihood of an outcome) for a discrete random variable (e.g., a stock or ETF) as opposed to a continuous random variable.
What is mixture density network?
z. p(t|x) Figure 2: The Mixture Density Network consists of a feed-forward neural network whose outputs determine the parameters in a mixture density model. The mixture model then represents the conditional probability density function of the target variables, conditioned on the input vector to the neural network.
Can a neural network model the mean of a distribution?
Generally Neural Networks are not used to model complete probability densities. Their focus is to just model the mean of a distribution (or in a deterministic situation simply a non-linear function). Nevertheless it is very possible to model complete probability densities via Neural Networks.
Can a density function be interpreted as a probability density function?
They can be interpreted as fitting a probability density function if suitable activation functions are chosen and certain conditions are respected (Values must be positive and ≤ 1, etc…). But that is a question of how you choose to interpret their output, not of what they are actually doing.
When to use neural networks in classification problems?
When in classification problems using neural networks we say that we want to learn a function f ∗ that maps the space of the inputs x, to the space of the outputs y: Are we fitting the parameters ( θ) to model a non-linear function, or to model a probability density function? I don’t really know how to write the question in a better way.
What kind of function is a neural network?
Strictly speaking, neural networks are fitting a non-linear function. They can be interpreted as fitting a probability density function if suitable activation functions are chosen and certain conditions are respected (Values must be positive and ≤ 1, etc…).
