What are hard and soft shadows?
Hard and soft light are different types of lighting that are commonly used in photography and filmmaking. Soft light is light that tends to “wrap” around objects, projecting diffused shadows with soft edges, whereas hard light is more focused and produces harsher shadows.
What causes a crisp shadow?
The farther away the shadow is from the object creating the shadow, the more blurry the shadow becomes. If light traveled only in perfectly straight lines and there were only point sources of light, all shadows would be perfectly crisp because the light would reach a spot and then not reach a spot right next to it.
What is harsh light?
What is Harsh Light? Harsh light photography is a situation in which the highlights and blacks within a scene are spaced out. In other terms, the contrast is harsh — there’s a hard line between light and shadow. Photographers often associate it with when the sun is higher in the sky.
What are characteristics of hard lighting techniques?
A hard light source is relatively small and/or large and distant. graduation of the shadows from light to dark. The transition from light to dark gets progressively smaller as light gets harder. Hard light creates harsh, sharp lines in the shadows with negligible or no transition from light to dark.
How do you soften shadows in photos?
There are many different ways to get that soft and diffused light source:
- Bounce the light off a large surface.
- Bounce the light into a reflective umbrella.
- Shoot your model through a diffuser panel.
- Use a softbox or octabox.
How do you take a hard light picture?
Generally, you should position hard light in the same ways that one would position soft light. If you want more directional quality, then you put it off to the side–but then keep in mind the shadows that you’re going to create. If you want more flat lighting, then bring the light in front of the subject.
When to use hard edge shadow or drop shadow?
Sometimes using the solid, hard edge shadow behind text can give it a cool retro vibe. This is especially true if the hard edge shadow is separated from the text slightly as well. These too however, can easily cross the line into cheese-land, so be careful and use it sparingly!
Which is more realistic soft or hard shadows?
Figure 3.20 Hard-edged shadows indicate light from a small point source. In many cases, using soft shadows (which are less distinct and fade off toward the edges, as in Figure 3.21) for some of your lights tends to look more realistic than using only hard shadows.

Are there any shadows that are too sharp?
By default, raytraced shadows from a point-source light are very sharp. In fact, they can often appear too sharp—more perfectly crisp than shadows cast by any light in real life.
