What is Group normalization?
Group Normalization (GN) is a middle ground between IN and LN. It organizes the channels into different groups, and computes 𝜇ᵢ and 𝜎ᵢ along the (H, W) axes and along a group of channels. Sᵢ is then the set of coefficients that are in the same input feature and also in the same group of channels as xᵢ.
What is layer normalization?
Layer normalization normalizes input across the features instead of normalizing input features across the batch dimension in batch normalization. Mini-batches are matrices(or tensors) where one axis corresponds to the batch and the other axis(or axes) correspond to the feature dimensions.
How does layer normalization help?
Layer normalization is very effective at stabilizing the hidden state dynamics in recurrent networks. Empirically, we show that layer normalization can substantially reduce the training time compared with previously published techniques.
Does batch normalization prevent overfitting?
Batch normalization offers some regularization effect, reducing generalization error, perhaps no longer requiring the use of dropout for regularization. Removing Dropout from Modified BN-Inception speeds up training, without increasing overfitting.
How does group normalization in GN work?
Group Normalization is a normalization layer that divides channels into groups and normalizes the features within each group. GN does not exploit the batch dimension, and its computation is independent of batch sizes.
Why do we need a group normalization layer?
A group normalization layer divides the channels of the input data into groups and normalizes the activations across each group. To speed up training of convolutional neural networks and reduce the sensitivity to network initialization, use group normalization layers between convolutional layers and nonlinearities, such as ReLU layers.
How does layer normalization work in machine translation?
Recently I came across with layer normalization in the Transformer model for machine translation and I found that a special normalization layer called “layer normalization” was used throughout the model, so I decided to check how it works and compare it with the batch normalization we normally used in computer vision models.
How to normalize the size of a minibatch?
Given inputs x over a minibatch of size m, B = { x 1, x 2, …, x m }, each sample x i contains K elements, i.e. the length of flatten x i is K, by applying transformation of your inputs using some learned parameters γ and β, the outputs could be expressed as B ′ = { y 1, y 2, …, y m }, where y i = LN γ, β ( x i).
