Can you run ANOVA with unequal variance?
If your groups have unequal variances, your results can be incorrect if you use the classic test. On the other hand, Welch’s ANOVA isn’t sensitive to unequal variances. Before I delve into the importance of this assumption, I’ll briefly describe how the simulation study tested it.
How do you know if a population variance is equal or unequal?
There are two ways to do so:
- Use the Variance Rule of Thumb. As a rule of thumb, if the ratio of the larger variance to the smaller variance is less than 4 then we can assume the variances are approximately equal and use the Student’s t-test.
- Perform an F-test.
How do you know if data has equal variance?
Equal variances (homoscedasticity) is when the variances are approximately the same across the samples. If you are comparing two or more sample means, as in the 2-Sample t-test and ANOVA, a significantly different variance could overshadow the differences between means and lead to incorrect conclusions.
Is the variance in ANOVA test due to chance?
The ANOVA test says this difference is significant and not likely due to chance. Now the F-test that the ANOVA analysis carries out assumes there is equal variance among residuals for each sulfamerazine group. The graph above is the visual assessment for this particular analysis.
Which is the rule of thumb for unequal variances?
Dean and Voss ( Design and Analysis of Experiments, 1999, page 112) suggest a rule of thumb to answer this question: if the ratio of the largest treatment variance estimate to the smallest treatment variance estimate does not exceed 3, s m a x 2 / s m i n 2 < 3, the assumption is probably satisfied.
What is the ratio of unequal variances in tvars?
The max and min functions find the maximum and minimum values of the variances stored in the tvars vector. The ratio is just under 3. We can probably rest easy but we may want to keep that in mind for future experiments. The sulfamerazine level of 15 grams may affect some fish more than others and cause increased variability in hemoglobin levels.
Is the ANOVA still a valid option in non-normal data?
Non-normal data: Is ANOVA still a valid option? The results showed that in terms of Type I error the F-test was robust in 100% of the cases studied, independently of the manipulated conditions.
