What packaging does LEGO use?
Today, approximately 75% of cardboard used to make LEGO boxes comes from recycled material. In addition, all the paper and cardboard used in our products and product packaging is recyclable, sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®C117818).
How are LEGOs distributed?
After they’re built, painted, and packaged, LEGO’s products are shipped to its primary distribution center in Prague. From Prague, they’re sent to warehouses across the globe and distributed to retailers. Ten years later, LEGO is still the envy of toymakers around the world — and a coveted toy for children everywhere.
How are LEGO bricks manufactured?
The Lego manufacturing process starts with tiny granules of ABS, brought by the lorry-load to factories. Here, they’re dumped into giant metal silos, then fed into molding machines where they’re heated to 230˚C (450˚F). This melts the granules, producing a plastic goo which is automatically fed into Lego part molds.
Is LEGO using paper bags?
Lego will start replacing plastic packaging with paper bags from 2021 as the toy brick maker aims to become more sustainable. From next year the toy company will start introducing recyclable paper bags, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, to package its loose bricks.

How are Legos so precise?
The machines use very accurate molds — their precision tolerance is as little as 0.002 millimeters. The machines melt the granules at temperatures of up to 450 degrees F (232 degrees C), inject the melted ABS into molds and apply between 25 and 150 tons of pressure.
Are Legos still plastic?
LEGO has moved on from bendy bioplastic to making a new prototype block that is fabricated from PET plastic from discarded bottles. It is the very first brick made from a recycled material to meet most of LEGO’s requirements for its standard ABS bricks.
Are LEGOs bad for the environment?
One of the biggest is its leaching into the environment. Just in the year 2014, Lego reported that it produced more than 60 billion Lego pieces. To make that many bricks required 77,000 metric tons of petroleum. If that isn’t bad enough, think about all the discarded little bricks making their way into landfills.

Machines at these facilities can turn out 500 bricks per second, which adds up to about 21 billion per year — and they operate so efficiently that on average only 12 of every 100,000 bricks are faulty. After they’re built, painted, and packaged, LEGO’s products are shipped to its primary distribution center in Prague.
How does the packaging process work for Lego?
During the packaging process, bins open and close automatically, dropping precise numbers of bricks into each polypropylene bag. A machine weighs these bags to make sure their contents are correct. If a specific bag’s weight is incorrect, an operator can replace that bag, rather than having to discard an entire set.
