Is measure theory used in machine learning?
This paper introduces a novel measure-theoretic learning theory for machine learning that does not require statistical assumptions. Unlike statistical learning theory, the proposed learning theory analyzes each problem instance individually via measure theory, rather than a set of problem instances via statistics.
How useful is measure theory?
Measure Theoretic Probability offers a very generalized view of probability. Using sets rather than distributions represented by either discrete or continuous functions, it allows for complex problems to be understood more simply… if you can get past the rigorous math!
Do statisticians need to know measure theory?
(Which doesn’t make sense, because when explained correctly measure theory is very intuitive.) And of course the vast majority of “graduate-level” textbooks in statistics don’t require or use any measure theory at all, even those which are considered “theoretical” (e.g. Berger and Casella).
Why is probability theory important to machine learning?
This is part one in a series of topics I consider fundamental to machine learning. Probability theory is a mathematical framework for quantifying our uncertainty about the world. It allows us (and our software) to reason effectively in situations where being certain is impossible.
How is probability theory used in the real world?
The notion of probability is used to measure the level of uncertainty. Probability theory aims to represent uncertain phenomena in terms of a set of axioms. Long story short, when we cannot be exact about the possible outcomes of a system, we try to represent the situation using the likelihood of different outcomes and scenarios.
How is probability theory important in artificial intelligence?
The probability theory is of great importance in many different branches of science. Let’s focus on Artificial Intelligence empowered by Machine Learning. The question is, “how knowing probability is going to help us in Artificial Intelligence?” In AI applications, we aim to design an intelligent machine to do the task.
Why do we need Pro B abilities in machine learning?
The first part will introduce fundamentals of probability theory. Why do we need pro b abilities when we already have such a great mathematical tooling? We have calculus to work with functions on the infinitesimal scale and to measure how they change.
