Do you need to normalize data for hierarchical clustering?
Our aim is to make clusters from this data that can segment similar clients together. We will, of course, use Hierarchical Clustering for this problem. But before applying Hierarchical Clustering, we have to normalize the data so that the scale of each variable is the same.
Do you need to normalize your data?
For machine learning, every dataset does not require normalization. It is required only when features have different ranges. For example, consider a data set containing two features, age, and income(x2). So we normalize the data to bring all the variables to the same range.
Do I need to normalize data before K-means?
Normalization is not always required, but it rarely hurts. Some examples: K-means: K-means clustering is “isotropic” in all directions of space and therefore tends to produce more or less round (rather than elongated) clusters.
Is it necessary to normalize data for hierarchical clustering?
1 Answer 1. Transforming your data by subtracting the minimum from every value and dividing the differences by the range is often called normalizing. The transformed data will lie within the interval $[0, 1]$. It is common to normalize all your variables before clustering.
How to cluster mixed categorical and continuous data?
A short discussion of methods for clustering mixed datasets of categorical and continuous data. Recently I had to do some clustering of data that contained both continuous and categorical features. Standard clustering algorithms like k-means and DBSCAN don’t work with categorical data.
Do you have to normalize variables in Excel?
You don’t have to normalize your variables though. It just means that how close objects are will be more reflective of their values on one variable than another. For instance, using your example data, the ranges are:
When to normalize by another measure of spread than range?
When all variables are quantitative (interval) then the coefficient is the range-normalized Manhattan distance converted into similarity. Because of the normalization variables of different units may be safely used. You should not, however, forget about outliers. (You might also decide to normalize by another measure of spread than range.)
