How to deal with non-normal residuals in multiple regression?
Multiple Regression: Dealing with Non-normal residuals. Many of us use multiple regression. For the most part, the review of the residuals is a trivial act, they are always close enough.
Can a regression be performed without normality tests?
In summary, it’s generally recommended to not rely on normality tests but rather diagnostic plots of the residuals. Without those plots or the actual values in your question it’s very hard for anyone to give you solid advice on what your data need in terms of analysis or transformation.
Can a regression be performed on normally distributed data?
It is a common misunderstanding that OLS somehow assumes normally distributed data. It does not. It is far more general. First, OLS regression makes no assumptions about the data, it makes assumptions about the errors, as estimated by residuals. Second, transforming data to make in fit a model is, in my opinion, the wrong approach.
When does the normality test say ” not normal “?
Your N is in that range where sensitivity starts getting high. If you run the following simulation in R a number of times and look at the plots then you’ll see that the normality test is saying “not normal” on a good number of normal distributions.
Can you do regression analysis with non normal data?
Non-normality in the predictors MAY create a nonlinear relationship between them and the y, but that is a separate issue. You have a lot of skew which will likely produce heterogeneity of variance which is the bigger problem.
What to do if residuals are not normally distributed?
If it makes a big difference, then you could try robust regression, which deals with outliers or quantile regression, which makes no assumptions about the distribution of the residuals. I am a fan of quantile regression, which I think is very underutilized.
Is the y-variable normally distributed in regression?
I suppose that is the origin of people thinking that the y-variable should be normally distributed as an assumption for regression, but the y-data distribution in regression is not conditional, and that is not true. It is desirable for estimated residuals to be normally distributed, though even that is not a very strict requirement.
