Is an empty set conditional?
The probability of the empty set impossible event is zero, and you cannot really condition on an event with probability zero. Conditioning on the full sample space really is saying that “the only fact that I know is that some outcome in the sample space happened”, as it must if your model is any good.
Why is vacuous a truth?
Such statements are considered vacuous truths, because the fact that the antecedent is false prevents using the statement to infer anything about the truth value of the consequent. Such statements make reasonable assertions about qualified objects which do not actually exist.
What does trivially true mean?
“Vacuous” is stronger: a statement is vacuously true if the proof basically boils down to a statement about every element of an empty set. For instance, a set is closed by definition if every limit point is in the set.
Which is the best example of conditional independence?
8.2. Conditional Independence An important concept for probability distributions over multiple variables is that of conditional independence (Dawid, 1980). Consider three variables a, b, and c, and suppose that the conditional distribution of a, given band c, is such that it does not depend on the value of b, so that p(a|b,c) = p(a|c). (8.20)
Are there any independent events that are NOT conditionally independent?
Also, we can have two events that are independent but not conditionally independent, given an event C. Here is a simple example regarding this case. Consider rolling a die and let C = { 1, 4 }. P ( A ∩ B) = 1 6 = P ( A) P ( B). Thus, A and B are independent.
Is there any other formula for conditional probability?
Any other formula regarding conditional probability can be derived from the above formula. Specifically, if you have two random variables X and Y, you can write Remember that the PMF is by definition a probability measure, i.e., it is P ( X = x k). Thus, we can talk about the conditional PMF.
How to determine the independence of two random variables?
Two discrete random variables X and Y are independent if PXY(x, y) = PX(x)PY(y), for all x, y. Equivalently, X and Y are independent if FXY(x, y) = FX(x)FY(y), for all x, y. So, if X and Y are independent, we have PX | Y(xi | yj) = P(X = xi | Y = yj) = PXY(xi, yj) PY(yj) = PX(xi)PY(yj) PY(yj) = PX(xi).
