What is gait recognition used for?
Gait recognition technology (GRT) can analyse the shape of an individual’s body and the unique way in which that body moves when walking or running, which can then be used to identify them. GRT works in a similar way to facial recognition technology.
How do you do gait recognition?
The steps in gait recognition.
- Step 1: acquisition of gait data. The ways of acquiring the original gait data depend on how to recognize the gait.
- Step 2: pre‐processing.
- Step 3: period extraction.
- Step 4: feature extraction.
- Step 5: classification.
What is meant by gait recognition?
Gait recognition refers to the use of video of human gait, processed by computer vision methods, to recognize or to identify persons based on their body shape and walking styles. This is a passive mode of accquiring biometric data from a distance.
Is gait recognition a thing?
Gait recognition is one kind of biometric technology that can be used to monitor people without their cooperation. Some researchers are working on visually-based systems that use video cameras to analyze the movements of each body part—the knee, the foot, the shoulder, and so on.
How reliable is gait recognition?
Up to 94 percent accuracy without seeing faces Gait recognition software is now accurate enough to identify people just by the way they walk. Facial recognition has made it to mainstream use in security systems and is a relatively secure method of securing mobile devices.
Who uses gait?
The development of treatment regimes, often involving orthopedic surgery, based on gait analysis results, advanced significantly in the 1980s. Many leading orthopedic hospitals worldwide now have gait labs that are routinely used to design treatment plans and for follow-up monitoring.
What features are observed in gait recognition?
The geometric structural properties of the human body are useful features for statistically characterizing the gait pattern of a person. The parameters may include, for example, height, weight, cadence, and stride.
What are gait abnormalities?
Abnormal gait or a walking abnormality is when a person is unable to walk in the usual way. This may be due to injuries, underlying conditions, or problems with the legs and feet.
Is a person’s gait unique?
Everyone’s walking style is unique, and it has been shown that both humans and computers are very good at recognizing known gait patterns.
What are the phases of gait?
Two Primary Phases of the Gait Cycle The gait cycle can be broken down into two primary phases, the stance and swing phases, which alternate for each lower limb. Stance phase: Consists of the entire time that a foot is on the ground. Swing phase: Consists of the entire time that the foot is in the air.
How does gait biometrics work?
Gait recognition essentially aims to recognize a person by automatically extracting movement characteristics of the walking person in the video. In fact, it seems that it is the possibility that a subject may not be aware of the surveillance and identification that raises public concerns about gait biometrics.
How is audio signature used in walking recognition?
As the reflected waves shift, they’re converted into an audio signature, which can then be analyzed and catalogued. Marshall says walking patterns aren’t necessarily unique to each person. But unlike fingerprints and voices, they can be analyzed without enrolling people in a database.
How is facial recognition used to identify people?
Facial recognition systems identify the shapes and expressions on a person’s face to identify them. Gait recognition uses a person’s body shape and their way of walking to identify them. The system records a person’s shape and movements and then creates a model of the way they walk.
Where is the gait recognition system being used?
The new system, known as “ gait recognition,” is already being used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese technology company Watrix developed the system. The company announced last month that it had raised $14.5 million to speed up the development and sale of the technology.
Why are scientists studying the way we walk?
Whether you’ve got a bounce in your stride or a swing in your step, the way you walk is more distinctive than you might realize. And it may contain important clues about what you’re doing. That’s why scientists are developing ways to identify and analyze walking patterns from a distance. You’ll hear about one of them in this Science Update.
