How do you adjust seasonality in Time Series?
Time Series Analysis: Seasonal Adjustment Methods
- Estimate the trend by a moving average.
- Remove the trend leaving the seasonal and irregular components.
- Estimate the seasonal component using moving averages to smooth out the irregulars.
What is seasonality time?
Seasonality is a characteristic of a time series in which the data experiences regular and predictable changes that recur every calendar year. Any predictable fluctuation or pattern that recurs or repeats over a one-year period is said to be seasonal.
How often should the seasonality of electricity be calculated?
Integer or non-integer periods. For example weekly data with annual seasonality recurs every 365.25 / 7 = 52.18 weeks. Multiple and nested (e.g. the daily and weekly seasonalities of hourly electricity demand) or multiple and not nested (e.g. the weekly and yearly seasonalities of daily electricity demand).
What are the seasonal patterns of electricity demand?
This is usually referred to as “off-peak”. Seasonal patterns: Demand levels during the summer and winter months tend to be higher than demand levels during the fall and spring “shoulder” seasons when system demand for space conditioning (heating or cooling) is low.
How often do weekly and annual seasonality recur?
For example weekly data with annual seasonality recurs every 365.25 / 7 = 52.18 weeks. Multiple and nested (e.g. the daily and weekly seasonalities of hourly electricity demand) or multiple and not nested (e.g. the weekly and yearly seasonalities of daily electricity demand). Obviously, mixed-flavor seasonality is harder to detect.
How is seasonality removed from a time series?
Removing Seasonality. Once seasonality is identified, it can be modeled. The model of seasonality can be removed from the time series. This process is called Seasonal Adjustment, or Deseasonalizing. A time series where the seasonal component has been removed is called seasonal stationary.
