What are potential problems that could affect DEF?
The three most common issues surrounding diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) are inadvertently putting DEF into the diesel tank, DEF contamination and improper handling of DEF.
Does DEF ruin engine?
Simply dumping diesel fuel in the DEF and vice versa (DEF in the fuel tank) will not harm your engine if you do not start the engine. If the engine is started for even a short time diesel fuel will ruin the SCR catalyst which is very costly to replace and will be out of warranty.
Is DEF system bad for diesel engines?
While it’s good for the environment, the water and urea mixture can result in the formation of crystals that can plug up fuel filters, damage aircraft engines, and result in engine failure. DEF should never be used as an additive for any fuel, diesel or aircraft, and is sprayed directly into exhaust systems.
How do you know if DEF is bad?
The easiest way to spot bad DEF is to look at it. The fluid is naturally clear so if it appears cloudy or colored, it’s likely contaminated or old. Contaminates, including small particles or larger rocks or dirt will also be easy to see. If DEF has gone bad, do not attempt to use it.
What causes DEF system failure?
Dirt / Metal Contamination: Contaminated DEF can cause abrasion of the DEF pump. Other Fluids: Contamination of the DEF tank from other fluids such as diesel fuel, coolant, or engine oil being added can cause damage to the SCR system and engine shutdown.
How bad is DEF fluid?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is not toxic, harmful or dangerous. In fact, of all the fluids used in a truck, such as diesel, engine oil, brake fluid, antifreeze and windscreen wash, DEF is the least hazardous.
Is it illegal to remove DEF system?
Businesses who delete/modify DPF systems: We had a yarn with the NSW Environmental Protection Agency, and they confirmed it is absolutely illegal (because you’re screwing with the pollution gear on a vehicle), and the accompanying on-the-spot fine for driving a vehicle with a DPF delete is $300.
Is DEF fluid bad for your engine?
How many miles does DEF last?
According to the owner’s manual, a full DEF tank should last 6,300 miles, but as everyone knows by now, your mileage will vary.
Can you delete DEF system?
The catch about a DEF system is that you have to keep its fluid reservoir filled regularly to keep it functioning properly. This doesn’t just take time – it costs money, too. Deleting your DEF system can help save you money. Plus, your exhaust might have a bit of a beefier growl once you’re done.
