The number of authors is unlimited in principal. There are publications with dozens if not hundreds of authors in large international multi-institutional projects. But in the last past years more and more journals have limited the number of co-authors. Typically the limitation is six authors.
Number of authors does not affect the credibility of first author. It is always good to include the names of each and every person who has contributed towards the work.
Generally there is no specific limit for the number of authors in an article. But 5 is fairly acceptable. Every author who contributed on the paper should be added as co-author. So, there is no limit for the author’s number.
How many authors are in a review article?
Regarding the number of authors, different journals have different expectations, but the Trends journals generally limit the number of authors to five for the Review format and three for other formats (including Opinions and short formats).

How many hyperprolific authors are there in the world?
We searched for news articles in Google detailing retractions for the next 20 most hyperprolific authors and found only one other author (Jeroen Bax) to have one retracted paper. The 265 hyperprolific authors worked in 37 countries, with the highest number in the United States ( n = 50), followed by Germany ( n = 28) and Japan ( n = 27).
