What is my IPv6 prefix delegation?
With prefix delegation, a delegating router (the BNG) delegates IPv6 prefixes to a requesting router (the CPE). The requesting router then uses the prefixes to assign global IP addresses to the devices on the subscriber LAN. DHCPv6 prefix delegation replaces the need for NAT in an IPv6 network.
What is Ia_na and Ia_pd?
The CPE initiates a connection request, and the NE20E uses DHCPv6 (IA_NA) to allocate IPv6 addresses to the WAN interfaces on the CPE and uses DHCPv6 (IA_PD) to allocate prefixes to the CPE and the CPE allocates the prefixes to the attached host for the host to generate IPv6 addresses.
What is system delegated prefix?
The prefix delegation feature lets a DHCP server assign prefixes chosen from a global pool to DHCP clients. It will then send router advertisements including the prefix, allowing other devices to use autoconfiguration to configure their own IPv6 addresses.
What type of connection is IPv6?
There are two main types of IPv6 WAN connectivity: native (Auto and Static) and tunneling over IPv4 (6to4, 6in4, and 6rd). Native – (Auto and Static) The upstream ISP routes IPv6 packets directly.
What is Ia_na?
Identity association for non-temporary addresses (IA_NA) An IA that carries assigned addresses that are not temporary addresses (see “identity association for temporary addresses”) Identity association for temporary addresses (IA_TA) An IA that carries temporary addresses (see RFC 3041 [12]).
How does IPv6 Slaac work?
The new method that IPv6 introduces is called Stateless Address Autoconfiguration(SLAAC), and described in RFC 4862. SLAAC works by combining part of the address from an interface’s gateway, learned via Router Advertisements(RAs), and an interface’s layer 2 address with “ff:fe” shoved in the middle of it.
What is router advertisement?
Router advertisements contain a list of subnet prefixes that is used to determine if a host is on the same link (on-link) as the router. The list of prefixes is also used for autonomous address configuration. Flags that are associated with the prefixes specify the intended uses of a particular prefix.
How does DHCPv6 Prefix delegation work with IPv6?
With the prefix delegation feature and DHCPv6, it automatically assigns prefixes to its customers: Each customer router configures an IPv6 address based on the prefix they received from the ISP using the general prefix feature and advertises the specific prefix (subnet) to host devices in router advertisements.
What kind of Prefix delegation does internode use?
Internode uses prefix delegation, and has handy guides for Cisco devices. As one whose hands on experience with IPv6 is mostly theoretical and tailored to certification test-taking, I thought I might break down prefix delegation and see how it works in practice. Prefix delegation pretty much does what it says on the tin.
How is an IPv6 prefix used in a router?
Each customer router configures an IPv6 address based on the prefix they received from the ISP using the general prefix feature and advertises the specific prefix (subnet) to host devices in router advertisements. Host devices are then able to configure their own IPv6 address using the prefix in the router advertisement and EUI-64.
How big of address space do I need for prefix delegation?
For most residential (and heck, most other types of customers) this is an enormous amount of address space – 256 /64s or even more if you want to go to smaller subnets. Lets fire up trusty old GNS3 and see how we do prefix delegation.
