Root Cause One of the most frequent causes for the crontab job not being correctly executed is that a cronjob does not run under the user’s shell environment. Another reason can be – not specifying the absolute path of the commands used in the script.
Why is cron job not running with same user?
The cron job doesn’t run with the same user with which you are executing the script manually – so it doesn’t have access to the same $PATH variable as your user which means it can’t locate the Java executable to execute the commands in the script. We should first fetch the value of PATH variable as below and then set it (export) in the script –

This should mirror most of your environment in case there is some missing path issue or something else.
Why does PPPD not work when running from cron?

The sort command does exactly what it says: it takes text data as input and outputs sorted data. There are many scenarios on the command line when you may need to sort output, such as the output from a command that doesn’t offer sorting options of its own (or the sort arguments are obscure enough that you just use the sort command instead).
When to use cron to troubleshoot a job?
If your job didn’t run when you expected it to, the easiest thing to rule out is a mistake with the cron expression. A common experience is to have a job that works flawlessly when run at the command line but fails whenever it’s run by cron. When this happens, eliminate these common failures:
What’s the difference between a cron and a crontab file?
The cron job specification format differs between users’ crontab files (/var/spool/cron/username or /var/spool/cron/crontabs/username) and the system crontabs ( /etc/crontab and the the files in /etc/cron.d ). The system crontabs have an extra field ‘user’ right before the command-to-run.
Why does Cron fail when my Password is expired?
Cron is calling a script that is not executable. By running chmod +x /path/to/script, the script becomes executable and this should resolve this issue. It is also possible that the user’s password has expired. Even root’s password can expire. You can tail -f /var/log/cron.log and you will see cron fail with password expired.

Why is the PATH variable not working in Cron?
It’s worth noting that variables from /etc/environment will be passed on to cron jobs, just not the variables cron specifically sets itself, such as PATH. To get around that, just set your own PATH variable at the top of the script. E.g. Some prefer to just use absolute paths to all the commands instead.
