What is Steam on Linux?
SteamOS is the primary operating system for the Steam Machine gaming platform and Steam Deck hybrid video game console by Valve. The initial versions of SteamOS, versions 1.0 and 2.0, were based on the Debian distribution of Linux. In July 2021, Valve announced the Steam Deck, a hybrid video game console.

Why does steam not use the runtime in Debian?
It won’t use its runtime and will only use the system libraries. The necessary packages to run entirely without the runtime have been removed in Debian 10/Buster, but Steam will automatically use specific newer system libraries in place of its runtime if they’re available.
Can you run Steam on Debian 7 Wheezy?
Packages are not currently available for Debian 7 “Wheezy”. If you want to run Steam on a Wheezy system, you would need to either build a jessie chroot (look at schroot for this) or upgrade to Jessie first. Instructions are for Jessie and Sid systems only. Do not do this on Wheezy or you will break your system.
Where can I find steam dependencies in Debian?
To find the packages containing the dependencies, use the Debian package search at http://packages.debian.org. You must be sure that the regular user that will run Steam games is at least at groups “video” and “audio”. Debian has a security approach that all is forbidden unless sysadmin explicitly allows.
Do you need graphics card for Steam on Debian 10?
Privileged access to your Linux system as root or via the sudo command. In order to play your games, or even use Steam for that matter, you’re going to need the latest graphics drivers for your card. Not to worry, you shouldn’t have any problem installing either the NVIDIA or AMD drivers on Debian 10.
