What is CP Reflink?
A symlink is a way to have two different folders share the same file. cp –reflink creates two files that initially share the same data blocks.
What is a reflink linux?
A reflink is a tool for doing copy-on-write on the filesystem. If you’ve heard the term copy-on-write before, I’m willing to bet that it was in the context of the Linux fork call.
What does reflink mean?
Reflinks is a tool that automatically or semi-automatically adds information to references using data present in the web page. It can process bare URLs (where the only information is a web address) or plain links (where the reference is a link and a title).
What is XFS Reflink?
Three years ago, I introduced to XFS a new experimental “reflink” feature that enables users to share data blocks between files. With this feature, users gain the ability to make fast snapshots of VM images and directory trees; and deduplicate file data for more efficient use of storage hardware.
How does git handle hard links?
Git will handle a hard link like a copy of the file, except that the contents of the linked files change at the same time. Git may see changes in both files if both the original file and the hard link are in the same repository.
Why are symbolic links less safe than hard links?
Any symlink to the file in /bin would be broken by this, but a hardlink, being a link directly to the inode for the file, wouldn’t care. Hard links may take less disk space as they only take up a directory entry, whereas a symlink needs its own inode to store the name it points to.
Does Git work with hard links?
You can use hard links instead of symlinks (a.k.a., soft links). Git will handle a hard link like a copy of the file, except that the contents of the linked files change at the same time. Git may see changes in both files if both the original file and the hard link are in the same repository.
Can git store symbolic links?
4 Answers. Git just stores the contents of the link (i.e. the path of the file system object that it links to) in a ‘blob’ just like it would for a normal file. It then stores the name, mode and type (including the fact that it is a symlink) in the tree object that represents its containing directory.
Why are reflinks better than copy on write?
With reflinks, the copy-on-write behavior means that if someone were to modify the data file the copy in the cache would not be polluted. That means we’d have the same performance advantage as traditional links, with the added advantage of data safety. Maybe, like me, you don’t know what a reflink is.
What’s the use of multiply hardlinks and reflinks?
The main use for multiply hardlinked files is to create efficient backups. reflinks are supported by BTRFS and OCFS2 and support transparent copy on write which is especially useful for snapshotting. Note that since separate inodes are used, one can have different permissions to access the same data.
How can reflinks help in the development of a project?
That is, to retrieve the state of the project at any given time, create branches or tags (with Git) based on an earlier state of a project, handle collaboration with colleagues, and so on.
Why do I need a copy of Btrfs?
Robustness reasons one may want a copy to take place to protect against data “loss”. We don’t know that’s the reason, but the bad things that can happen are limited to destruction of media. Most all block devices will have some form of corruption identification (crc), if not forward error correction (parity).
