There are three types of share permissions: Full Control, Change and Read. You can set each of them to “Deny” or “Allow” to control access to shared folders or drives: Read — Users can view file and subfolder names, read data in files, and run programs. By default, the “Everyone” group is assigned “Read” permissions.

What happens when a folder with NTFS permissions is copied to shared folder on a FAT volume?
What happens when a folder with NTFS permissions is copied to shared folder on a FAT volume? The folder inherits the share permissions, but loses the NTFS permissions.
Permissions are important because when you share something in Windows, you actually assign a set of permissions to a specific user account or user group. A shared folder can only be accessed by someone with a user account that has the permission to access that folder.
You can apply different NTFS permissions to each file and subfolder that a shared folder contains. In addition to shared folder permissions, users must have NTFS permissions for the files and subfolders that shared folders contain to gain access to those files and subfolders.
Can a shared folder be accessed by another user?
A shared folder can only be accessed by someone with a user account that has the permission to access that folder. For example, when using the Sharing Wizard, you choose the user name or the user group and then one of these two permission levels: Read/Write – it is the equivalent of the “Modify” permission level.
Click Permissions. In the Permissions dialog box, remove the Everyone group, if it exists. Add the appropriate user or group that should have access to the share. Specify the permissions (Full Control, Change, Read) for the user or group. Click OK twice and then click Close to close the dialog boxes.
