What are AWS route tables?
A route table contains a set of rules, called routes, that are used to determine where network traffic from your subnet or gateway is directed. To put it simply, a route table tells network packets which way they need to go to get to their destination.
What is route propagation in AWS?
Route propagation allows a virtual private gateway to automatically propagate routes to the route tables so that you don’t need to manually enter VPN routes to your route tables. You can enable or disable route propagation.
What is local in route table?
The local routing table allow the system to route to the appropriate interface to reach an address. Routes are selected using the most specific (smallest subnet) route. However, you testing routes handled by loopback address.
What is IGW in AWS?
An internet gateway is a horizontally scaled, redundant, and highly available VPC component that allows communication between your VPC and the internet. An internet gateway supports IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. It does not cause availability risks or bandwidth constraints on your network traffic.
How does a route table work?
A routing table contains the information necessary to forward a packet along the best path toward its destination. Each packet contains information about its origin and destination. Routing Table provides the device with instructions for sending the packet to the next hop on its route across the network.
What is target local in route table?
Target—The gateway, network interface, or connection through which to send the destination traffic; for example, an internet gateway. Local route—A default route for communication within the VPC.
How do you add a route to a route table?
How to Add a Static Route to the Routing Table
- View the current state of the routing table.
- Assume the Primary Administrator role or become superuser.
- (Optional) Flush the existing entries in the routing table.
- Add a route that persists across system reboots.
How does the main route table work in AWS?
The main route table controls the routing for all subnets that are not explicitly associated with any other route table. In addition, on the Route Tables page in the Amazon VPC console, you can view the main route table for a VPC by looking for Yes in the Main column.
What are the destination and target fields in AWS?
Each route has a destination and target field. Destination field specifies the pattern that a request must match with its destination address ( IP or CIDR range ). Target field specifies where such a request should be routed.
What does target mean in Amazon Web Services?
Target field specifies where such a request should be routed. It could be local (i.e. to targets in this VPC) or your-internet-gateway-ID in case those requests should be routed to the gateway for external/somewhere-else access. A list of possible target values is here.
Which is an example of a route table?
Edge association – For example, you use to route inbound VPC traffic to an appliance. You associate a route table with the internet gateway or virtual private gateway, and specify the network interface of your appliance as the target for VPC traffic.
