Is DNS routed through VPN?
If a DNS Server isn’t assigned by the vpn server but your gateway is redirected, the dns traffic will simply go through the tunnel before making it to it’s destination.
Can you use DNS and VPN at the same time?
You cannot use both VPN and the Smart DNS service at the same time as they conflict with each other. Also, the VPN encryption will affect the speed of the internet connection and you will lose the biggest advantage of using Smart DNS. There is only one case when it is practical to use both services at the same time.
Where does OpenVPN get its DNS address from?
This means that *.openvpn.net will get resolved through the VPN DNS server, and the rest will resolve through the local DNS server 192.168.47.254. Note also that the VPN interface gets 3 IPv6 self-assigned DNS server addresses, which are not assigned by OpenVPN, but by the OS itself. This should not affect DNS resolution.
When to add a route to a VPN?
Routes can also be added at connect time through the server for UWP VPN apps. In a force tunnel configuration, all traffic will go over VPN. This is the default configuration and takes effect if no routes are specified. The only implication of this setting is the manipulation of routing entries.
Is there a DNS server coming from VPN network?
No VPN DNS IP in /etc/resolve.conf . It works though if i set “use default gateway on remote network” (generally i don’t want) setting in vpn configuration. @asvetliakov – Thanks for reporting the issue. Yes, we are aware of issues with VPN, as you can also see in #416. We are actively working on a solution for this. @misenesi as FYI.
Why is my VPN connecting but no LAN access?
The reason your method worked is surely due to arp-cache! The lack of connectivity is generally either vpn client configuration based, or the firewall on the local pc’s that are unable to pass traffic would be the first thing I would check.
