What does virtual memory include?
Virtual memory is a feature of an operating system that enables a computer to be able to compensate shortages of physical memory by transferring pages of data from random access memory to disk storage. This process is done temporarily and is designed to work as a combination of RAM and space on the hard disk.
What data does virtual memory use?
Virtual memory uses both hardware and software to enable a computer to compensate for physical memory shortages, temporarily transferring data from random access memory (RAM) to disk storage. Mapping chunks of memory to disk files enables a computer to treat secondary memory as though it were main memory.
Is virtual memory the same as page file?
Paging file is also called a swap file.” Your computer holds data it’s working with in memory. Virtual memory allows your computer to use more memory than is available physically by using hard disk space. The hard disk space used is the page file.
Does virtual memory slow down computer?
Virtual memory is much slower than main memory because processing power is being taken up by moving data around, rather than just executing instructions. Using virtual memory slows the computer down because copying to a hard disk takes much longer than reading and writing RAM.
How much virtual memory does the Windows kernel use?
When a system uses virtual memory, the kernel uses virtual memory as well. Windows will use the upper 2GB (or 1GB if you’ve specified the /3GB switch in the Windows bootloader) for its own use.
How does virtual memory work in an operating system?
Virtual memory allows an operating system to escape the limitations of physical RAM. The virtual memory manager creates a logical address space (or “ virtual” address space) for each process and divides it up into uniformly-sized chunks of memory called pages.
Where are the kernel data and page tables located?
As I mentioned earlier, the kernel’s code, data, and the page tables themselves need to be located somewhere. This information is located in the kernel address space. It is possible that certain parts of the kernel’s code, data, and page tables can themselves be swapped out to disk as needed.
How big is the virtual memory system in iOS?
In later versions of iOS, A7- and A8-based systems expose 16-kilobyte pages to the 64-bit userspace backed by 4-kilobyte physical pages, while A9 systems expose 16-kilobyte pages backed by 16-kilobyte physical pages. These sizes determine how many kilobytes the system reads from disk when a page fault occurs.
