Can the kernel disable interrupts?
Some critical kernel functions can execute on a CPU only if no interrupt handler or deferrable function is running on any other CPU. Before acquiring the spin lock, the kernel must disable local interrupts, otherwise an interrupt handler could freeze waiting until the interrupted program released the spin lock.
Why are interrupts handled in kernel mode instead of user mode?
This is important to know that a process in Kernel mode get power to access any device and memory, and same time any crash in kernel mode brings down the whole system. But any crash in user mode brings down the faulty process only. The kernel provides System Call Interface (SCI), which are the entry points for kernel.
Can we disable interrupts on all processors in Linux kernel?
No there is not generally a simple way to disable all interrupts on all processors around a section of code. But you would rarely need to do that. In most cases all you need is to prevent the code from executing on another CPU, and also prevent interrupts on the current cpu.
Does spinlock disable preemption?
spinlock automatically disables preemption, which avoids deadlock caused by interrupts. when data is shared with interrupt handler, before holding spinlock we must disable interrupts. when data is shared with bottom halves, before holding spinlock we must disable bottom halves.
What is difference between user and kernel mode?
The kernel is the core of the computer system. The key difference between User Mode and Kernel Mode is that user mode is the mode in which the applications are running and kernel mode is the privileged mode to which the computer enters when accessing hardware resources.
When to change from user mode to kernel mode?
from user mode to kernel mode – Hardware Interrupt is needed [like in Disk I/O]. Now, in case user program tires to access an memory which is beyond its permissible range, a trap occurs, which is basically a software interrupt which will be handled by OS.
Can a interrupt be processed in kernel mode?
😉 Yes, interrupts are processed in kernel mode, and originally the way to enter kernel mode was by an interrupt forced somehow by software. On the DEC 2020 there was a set of UIOs (Unimplemented Instruction Opcodes), calling any of those caused a trap to the operating system.
What happens when a kernel mode driver crashes?
If a kernel-mode driver accidentally writes to the wrong virtual address, data that belongs to the operating system or another driver could be compromised. If a kernel-mode driver crashes, the entire operating system crashes. This diagram illustrates communication between user-mode and kernel-mode components.
Why does my processor run in user mode?
A processor running in user mode cannot access virtual addresses that are reserved for the operating system. Limiting the virtual address space of a user-mode application prevents the application from altering, and possibly damaging, critical operating system data.
