What is Linux TUN interface?
Tun/tap interfaces are a feature offered by Linux (and probably by other UNIX-like operating systems) that can do userspace networking, that is, allow userspace programs to see raw network traffic (at the ethernet or IP level) and do whatever they like with it.
What is tun0 interface?
TUN/TAP provides packet reception and transmission for user space programs. In other words, TUN/TAP interfaces are virtual interfaces that does not have physical devices associated. A user space program can attach to a TUN/TAP interface and handle the traffic sent to the interface.
What is TAP network adapter?
The TAP-Windows Adapter is a network driver, used by VPN services to connect to servers. This means that for most VPN clients (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, CyberGhost, etc.) If you use a browser extension VPN, you won’t come across it, but won’t have the benefits of a full-feature VPN client installed on your system directly.
What is tun10?
In practical terms, a TUN interface is the emulation of a layer 3 interface. That is, it is a network layer emulation device that can tunnel data packets of varied nature, be it raw TCP, UDP, SCTP or encapsulated packets such as PPP, PPTP, AH/IPSEC, whatever.
What is a tap adapter?
What does tap stand for VPN?
TUN/TAP is used to provide packet reception and transmission for user space programs. TUN stands for network TUNnel) is a network layer device and TAP stands for network TAP and it is a link layer device and both of them are virtual network kernel devices.
How do I create a tun device for the actual?
Here my tunnel device is 11.11.11.2/24 and I am setting the route get 10.16.1.152. My understanding is that all the packets received or sent on the actual interface i.e. 10.16.1.152 will be received by this tunnel device interface, whose IP address is 11.11.11.2.
Can a tun interface be an existing interface?
A tun interface is always a new network interface, distinct from all existing interfaces. But you can use packet sockets to write raw packets to (or read raw packets from) an existing network interface. See man 7 packet for details.
How to create a VPN tunnel with Tun?
That is if data is coming on the network interface /* data from the network: read it, and write it to the tun interface. dread = read_n (net_fd, buffer, ntohs (plength)); //read the packet over the network interface.
What can a tun device be used for?
The Tun device is basically an interface which allows a user space program to send and receive L3 packets to and from the interface. This can be used for purposes like Virtualization where guests packets can be bridged to connect to guest.
