How does UEFI booting work?
The UEFI brings the concept of the BIOS to a whole new level. Instead of a 512-byte MBR and some boot code, the UEFI, in contrast to the legacy BIOS option, knows what a filesystem is and even has its own filesystem, with files and drivers. This filesystem is typically between 200 and 500MB and formatted as FAT32.
What is stage2 bootloader?
A two-stage bootloader actually consists of two bootloaders after each other. The first being small with the sole purpose of loading the second one. The second one can then contain all the code needed for loading the kernel. GRUB uses two (or arguably, three) stages.
Where is UEFI bootloader?
/EFI/ directory
UEFI is a mini-operating system that sits on top of a computer’s hardware and firmware. Instead of being stored in firmware, as is the BIOS, the UEFI code is stored in the /EFI/ directory in non-volatile memory.
Does UEFI start real mode?
Switching to protected mode is done early on in the so-called “SEC Phase” of EFI firmware initialization. Technically, 32-bit and greater x86 processors don’t even start in real mode proper, but in what is colloquially known as unreal mode.
Is UEFI still a BIOS?
UEFI replaces the legacy Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface originally present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers, with most UEFI firmware implementations providing support for legacy BIOS services.
What happens at the post stage of the boot process?
The POST Process. It’s the BIOS that’s responsible for a variety of error messages such as “keyboard error or no keyboard present” or warnings about mismatched/unrecognized memory. At this point, the majority of the BIOS’ work has completed and it’s almost ready to move on to the next stage of the boot process.
What does the boot signature on a BIOS mean?
Boot Signature. On IBM-compatible PCs (basically, everything) the final two bytes of the 512-byte MBR are called the boot signature and are used by the BIOS to determine if the selected boot drive is actually bootable or not.
Where is the bootloader file stored on the partition?
The second stage of the bootloader, stored in the partition bootsector in the bootstrap section and, optionally, continuing beyond it, carries out the next step in the bootloader process: it looks up a file stored on the partition itself (as a regular file), and tells the CPU to execute its contents to begin the final part of the boot process.
How does the BIOS / MBR boot process work?
The MBR loads the first 512 bytes of the active partition into the memory and instructs the CPU to execute them. The very first (three) bytes of the partition bootsector contain a single JMP instruction, telling the CPU to skip xx bytes ahead and execute the next stage of the bootloader from there.
