What is a dummy device?
A dummy device contains all four sensor values that can be used as variables to store custom numerical data. ( floating point values, like 123.50) The dummy device can be used like any other sensor to send it’s data to the Home Automation controller.
How does a network driver work?
A network driver is in principle a simple thing: its purpose is to provide the kernel with the means to transmit and receive data packets to and from network using a physical network interface. The driver is loaded into the kernel as a network module.
What is the purpose of dummy load?
A dummy load is a device used to simulate an electrical load, usually for testing purposes. In radio a dummy antenna is connected to the output of a radio transmitter and electrically simulates an antenna, to allow the transmitter to be adjusted and tested without radiating radio waves.
What is probing in device driver?
The purpose of the probe routine is to detect devices residing on the bus and to create device nodes corresponding to these devices. The probe routine specifies a physical device ID as a device node property so that the bus driver can find the appropriate device driver for this device node.
Which is an example of a dummy network interface?
An example, dummy network interface for any network application which requires the network card to work, VPN adapter, virtual loopback adapter, virtual interface bridged to the real network, virtual interface for routing some specific connections which is to be captured by packet filtering framework and etc..
What is the use of the dummy device?
If I do the following test with the dummy device type: If I ping 2.2.2.2, it will go to the loopback interface. If I ping 2.2.2.10, it will go to the dummy_xmit () function, but that will destroy the packet. If the only case where the packet is not destroyed is when the loopback is being used, why not just use loopback ?
Is the loopback a real hardware interface or a dummy interface?
The loopback is completely software based and used as an dummy interface to the network. The eth0 is the default name given to real hardware interface for realtek 8139 network card.
How to write a driver for a network card?
As a note, the driver development was done in C and as a module, so I assume its readers to be significantly exposed to C and l inux environment. The document intends only to show some essential points in building a driver for a network card. (For better and professional ones please refer to linux source listing).
