I had similar problem (debian stretch, realtek network card). My network card hadn’t received IP addr from DHCP server. Try command dhclient to get IP addr from DHCP server. If it helps, check contenets of the /etc/network/interfaces file.

2 @Ian no, security updates are provided on security.debian.org, not through backports or updates. There won’t be any more non-LTS stable updates, so jessie-updatesis no longer useful on the main mirror network, and there won’t be any more backports either, so the same goes for jessie-backports.
