What happens to the permissions of a file or folder that is moved to a different NTFS volume How is this different from when it is moved within the same NTFS volume?
When you copy a protected file to a folder on the same, or a different volume, it inherits the permissions of the target directory. However, when you move a protected file to a different location on the same volume, the file retains its access permission setting as though it is an explicit permission.
What basic NTFS permissions do you need to move a file?
To move files and folders within an NTFS partition or between NTFS partitions, you must have both Write permission for the destination folder and Modify permission for the source folder or file.
What happens to my permissions when I move a folder?
When you copy or move a file or folder on an NTFS volume, how Windows Explorer handles the permissions on the object varies, depending on whether the object is copied or moved within the same NTFS volume or to a different volume.
How does permission propagation work in a folder?
Permissions propagation also works for new folders. If someone creates Folder C as a child of either Folder A or B, User has Read access to Folder C. Inheritance is another term for permissions propagation. In the above example, we can also say Folder B is inheriting permissions from Folder A.
What happens when a file has read permission?
If a file has Write permission for user1, then the file will be set to Contribute for user1 in SPO. If a file has Read permission for user1, then the file will be set to Read for user1 in SPO. For Full control permission, the file will be migrated as Full control in SPO.
How are permissions copied in a folder tree?
Permissions propagation is the process whereby permissions from a higher level node in a folder tree are copied to a child node further down in that same folder tree. For example: The user has Read access to Folder A. Folder B is a child folder of Folder A.
