How many participants are in a card sort?
Tullis and Wood recommend testing 20–30 users for card sorting. Based on their data, my recommendation is to test 15 users.

What is a card sort test?
Card sorting is a technique in user experience design in which a person tests a group of subject experts or users to generate a dendrogram (category tree) or folksonomy. It is a useful approach for designing information architecture, workflows, menu structure, or web site navigation paths.
How does group in person card sorting work?
Group / Independent – Concurrent In-person Sessions have participants sort a set of cards independently. The facilitator may brief the participants at the beginning and debrief the participants at the end, but the participant works alone for most of the session.
Why are open card sorts difficult to analyze?
Open card sorts are particularly difficult to analyze because they produce a variety of content structures. Different participants will give different names to different groups. You can try and make sense of it by identifying common traits across participants but there is always some guesswork involved.
When to use closed or hybrid card sorting?
In a closed card sort participants sort cards into existing categories provided for them. This method is ok if you already have deep knowledge of your user, or if the groups you are using are well established. In a hybrid card sort participants start with existing groups but can also create extra groups if needed.
