How to find elevation on Google Maps in a web browser
- Type your location into the search bar on the left side.
- Click the “Menu” bar, which is next to the search bar and is represented by the three horizontal lines in the top-left.
- Hit “Terrain” to show topography and elevation.
Where does Google get elevation data?
Google appears to use a range of digital elevation model data sources to derive the terrain layer. Throughout the US, it appears that the terrain layer comes from either 10 or 30 m (1/3 arc-second & 1 arc-second respectively) DEMs from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED).
