Why have my files disappeared from Google Drive?
Files stored in Google Drive can “go missing” when they become “orphaned”. This is when the file exists but the parent folders it was located in are deleted. For example, this can occur if you create a file in a folder owned by someone else and that folder is deleted.
Where did my files go on Google Drive?
Check the activity panel
- On a computer, go to drive.google.com.
- On the left, click My Drive.
- At the top right, click Info .
- Scroll down and look for your file.
What happened to my folders in Google Drive?
“Your Google Drive folder is missing.” The error most commonly happens when you rename, move, or delete the Google Drive folder on your computer. If you moved the Google Drive folder to a new place on your computer: Click the Google Drive icon in your computer’s toolbar.

I’m thinking that when an owner (whose account is functional) deletes a shared file, that shared file can still be accessed by those with whom it is shared. Why then can’t a shared file be accessed by the people it’s shared with even when the owner’s account is deleted?

How can I restore deleted files from Google Drive?
If you deleted something recently using Google Drive or the Google Drive desktop app, you might be able to restore the file yourself. Restore from your Trash On a computer, go to drive.google.com/drive/trash. Tip: You can sort your trashed files by trashed date to find the oldest or newest files trashed.
