How does a domain name translate to an IP address?
DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources. Each device connected to the Internet has a unique IP address which other machines use to find the device. DNS servers eliminate the need for humans to memorize IP addresses such as 192.168.
There are hundreds of root servers at over 130 locations all over the world. ICANN² is responsible for the servers for one of the 13 IP addresses and entrusts the operation of the rest to various other organizations. In total, there are 12 organizations held responsible, with VeriSign operating two of them³.
Where are authoritative nameservers located on a DNS server?
Each part of a domain like www.google.com has a specific authoritative DNS nameserver (or group of redundant authoritative nameservers). At the top of the server tree are the root domain nameservers. Every website address has an implied “.” at the end, even if we don’t type it in.
