What are some inappropriate uses of tables?
Here are some reasons why table layouts are bad:
- Tables are semantically incorrect markup for layout.
- Tables are horrible for screen readers.
- Tables break text copying on some browsers.
- Tables are usually more bytes of markup.
- Tables lock you into the current design and make redesigns MUCH harder than semantic HTML+CSS.
Why do we need tables in page design?
Tables can be used to restrict the output so that the display remains constant, or fixed; thus independent of not only the browser, but also the monitor size. It is important to realise that it is not a monitor’s absolute size that is usually of interest, but rather its screen resolution.
Why are tables useful?
Tables are used to organize data that is too detailed or complicated to be described adequately in the text, allowing the reader to quickly see the results. They can be used to highlight trends or patterns in the data and to make a manuscript more readable by removing numeric data from the text.
Is HTML table still used?
This was commonly used because CSS support across browsers used to be terrible; table layouts are much less common nowadays, but you might still see them in some corners of the web. In short, using tables for layout rather than CSS layout techniques is a bad idea.
Why do you not use tables for layout?
Tables were intended to be used for holding tabular data, and never intended for the positioning of layout elements on your page. This alone doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them, but indicates a reason that you should use something else. At the end of this article I’ll explain why CSS is a much better solution.
Why do you need to create a table?
Scroll to the end of the article if you’re interested in designing tables for pure exploration. Use tables if you want to enable readers to look up specific information. Readers will be able to find the data that applies to them – their location, age, income range, etc. – often faster in a table than in a text or a chart.
Why do we not use tables in HTML?
It’s often still necessary to change some HTML code but the changes will always be much more confined. Additionally, design changes must on occasion be made dynamically. Consider template engines such as the one used by the WordPress blogging system. Table layouts would literally kill this system.
Why are table based web pages less accessible?
Table-based pages are also much less accessible to users with disabilities and viewers using cell phones and PDAs to access the Web. Modern browsers are much better at rendering Web standards and we don’t need to use these archaic methods any more.
