Do translations violate copyright?
Only the copyright owner can authorize a translation that will be distributed. This includes works that are translated into another language and distributed in parts of the world where that language is spoken. Derivative works are infringing if they are not created with the permission of the copyright holder.
Can I translate without copyright?
You don’t need any permission to translate a work which is in public domain. Any piece of text or literature that was written before the origin of the copyrights laws, or the one whose copyrights have been expired, are considered the works in the public domain.
Are Google translations copyrighted?
Translations are classified as derivative works in U.S. copyright law. Assuming that such a mechanical translation is a protected derivative work (which may be unwarranted; See here for a comment not from WikiLegal), the resulting copyright owner would be the user of the software, not the software manufacturer.
