There’s research to prove that using disabled button elements is bad for usability and accessibility. The core problem is that when a button is disabled, the user won’t know why it is disabled.
So a screen reader user will most likely navigate to the disabled button and they’ll hear that it’s disabled. The short answer is the code you have is ok. A screen reader will know the button is disabled even though it can’t receive typical keyboard focus.
Why disabling buttons is bad?
It is a bad practice to disable buttons. Disabling the button prevents our chance to tell the user what is wrong. The user keeps clicking the button and is totally in the dark why nothing happens.
Here’s another reason why disabled buttons are bad though: Disabled buttons usually have call to action words on them, like “Send”, “Order” or “Add friend”. Because of that, they often match what users want to do. So people will try to click them.

- put it in greyscale (if enabled buttons are colourful)
- make it lighter or put a transparant white overlay over it (if enabled buttons are generally dark)
- make it flat (if enable buttons have a 3D kind of surface)
- do not highlight the button when hovering over it (of enabled buttons have that behaviour)
How do I show button is disabled?
A disabled button is unusable and un-clickable. The disabled attribute can be set to keep a user from clicking on the button until some other condition has been met (like selecting a checkbox, etc.). Then, a JavaScript could remove the disabled value, and make the button clickable again.
While designing the UI, avoid using a disabled button as it becomes hard to find out why it is disabled and what should be done to make it enable. It is better to keep buttons enabled all the time and highlight the field if users don’t provide the required information.
