Your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) has two buttons – the home button at the front and the sleep (or wake) button near the top right-hand corner.
Sleep/Wake button. Use the Sleep/Wake button to turn on or wake iPhone, lock it, or turn it off. Locking iPhone puts the display to sleep, saves the battery, and prevents anything from happening if you touch the screen.
On/Off Sleep/Wake Button: This button is on the top of iPhone, to the right, and it does two things. When you press and hold it, it turns iPhone on or off, and when you press and release it when your iPhone is On, it wakes iPhone from sleep (and you see the Lock screen) or puts iPhone to sleep.

Where is the sleep key on the keyboard?
It may be on the function keys, or on the dedicated number pad keys. If you see one, then that is the sleep button. You will likely use it by holding down the Fn key, and the sleep key.
The Sleep/Wake button is located along the side edge of an iPhone 6, and at the top edge of earlier iPhone versions. When you press it, the screen turns black and the iPhone is put to sleep. When your iPhone is asleep, or on standby, you can still receive calls, texts and other communications.
