What to do when time machine says there is not enough disk space?
Once Time Machine finds it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start over or get a larger drive. Time Machine backup drives should be at least 2-3 times the total capacity of the drive(s) backed up.

What was the problem with my Time Machine?
TLDR: It wasn’t Apple’s fault. A third party app, Disk Drill by CleverFiles was causing the issue. It was also causing the issue that prevented hard drive space freeing up as I deleted files.
