What resolution is HiDPI?
Most HiDPI monitors have twice the resolution of a comparable “standard DPI” display, which is ideal for scaling bitmap images. For example, a typical 27″ monitor may have a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels (109 DPI). A HiDPI 27″ monitor may have a resolution of 5120×2880, which is twice the pixel density (218 DPI).

How do you mimic a 2K monitor as retina display on Mac using HiDPI?
Setup
- Download and install SwitchResX.
- (For macOS Sierra only) Disable SIP under recovery mode.
- Open SwitchResX from system preference menu, go to your 2K monitor, open the tab Custom Resolutions, press “+” .
- After reboot, open SwitchResX again, go to your 2K monitor.

Are 4K monitors retina?
A 4K display is generally a 3840 x 2160 resolution regardless of its size, but a Retina display’s resolution usually changes based on its size. This gives it a PPI of 264, which Apple considers enough to be a Retina display for a tablet.

Is it possible to enable HiDPI on MacBook Pro?
Apple made it possible to enable HiDpi on 4k+ displays only, irrespectively to display vendor. If someone told me about it before I buy macbook on Big Sur, I would certainly change my mind. This is for all us to understand: it’s not a bug, but a planned marketing feature and noone in going to fix it. Sad, but true.
How to simulate a Retina display in Mac OS X?
Note: free Apple Developer account required. Launch Quartz Debug application. Go to menu: Window —> UI Resolution. Check Enable HiDPI display modes. Quit Quartz Debug. Open System Preferences. Select Displays icon. If using multiple display, select the configuration window on the display you wish to simulate HiDPI mode on.
How much scaling do I need for HiDPI scaling?
If I want 125% scaling I want to create a virtual resolution of 175% of my screen’s native resolution which will HiDPI scaled down to an effective resolution of 85% of my native resolution making everything appear… ??? 15% Larger?? Brain hurts. Close enough I decide. Try it with virtual resolution of 4480 x 2520.
