Where do I find the Time Machine backup log?
Time Machine keeps a log specific to each backup in the root directory of the backup. In Terminal, go to /Volumes/[TM disk name]/Backups.backupdb/[Machine name]/Latest and have a look at the file .Backup.log You can see it by typing ‘sudo more .Backup.log’ once in the above directory.
What happens when I back up my Mac to time machine?
The first backup may take a long time, but you can continue using your Mac while a backup is underway. Time Machine backs up only the files that changed since the previous backup, so future backups will be faster. To start a backup manually, choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar.

If you have a Time capsule, some entries will have “Time Capsule”appearing as in them, but they are not the only entries related backups. The workhorse of the actual backup is something called the backup daemon – appearing as “backupd” in the log file. You can search the log for relevant entries and see if there are any clues.
