What does the AirPort Utility app do?
AirPort Utility is a built-in Mac app that is used to configure and control Wi-Fi networks using Apple’s AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, and Time Capsule. The AirPort Extreme is a base station router like you would use when setting up your Wi-Fi network.
How do I use AirPort utility on Time Capsule?

Why does AirPort Utility not find my time capsule?
Same here on my Time Capsule. Wifi works on all my devices but Airport Utility can’t find the Time Capsule and Time Machine can’t find the Backup drive. After a bit of troubleshooting I think it may have something to do with configuring Back to my Mac on the Airport/Time Capsule.
Can a Gen5 Airport Express be used with a time capsule?
Worse .. Apple removed the ability that existed in Gen5 and earlier Extreme or Time Capsule. I am not sure about the Express. To use the Gen5 airport extreme along with the AC model (not officially Gen6 but we do call it that). Sort of depends on how your network is setup.
Why does AirPort Utility not show up on my Mac?
After a bit of troubleshooting I think it may have something to do with configuring Back to my Mac on the Airport/Time Capsule. If I reset the router back to factory defaults and set up as new, it appears in Airport Utility just fine.
What kind of AirPort Utility do I Need?
You will need an older version of AirPort Utility 5.6.1 installed on your Mac to view any of the logs on the AirPort Express and prior generation AirPort Extreme.
