What to do if your MacBook Pro freezes?
Macbook completely freezes, only way to fix is to force shutdown. This is happening to my 16 inch MacBook Pro too. Two weeks in to using macbook pro 16 2019. $7000aud machine (64gb ram, 2.4ghz 8 core i9 etc). As mentioned by OP, freezes in chrome when a lot of tabs are open.

My cursor on my Mac (running the latest version of El Capitan) has been freezing for a split second around every 10 seconds – it then reappears in the place it should’ve been if it hadn’t disappeared. I’ve tried using a different mouse – still occurs.

Facing the same issue on Mac OS Catalina on (macbook pro 15′, 2018) with a RedGear Manta USB gaming mouse. That split second pause of the mouse is driving me crazy. Happens when no screen is connected. Further, I also use bootcamp (win 10) on the same mac – does not occur in windows at all – same hardware.
What to do when MacBook Pro says about second remaining?
To resolve this, when it says “about a second remaining” just leave it and it will finish eventually (mine took almost 4 hours). Worst thing you can do is keep trying over and over again as you’ll just be wasting your time. It will finish the installation, even if it has errors 🙂 I had the same issue.
