Why does my MAC have two IP addresses?
The fundamental reason for this is that the MAC address is a hardware or burned-in address (data link layer) while IP addresses are from the network layer where more than one IP address can be assigned from your LAN segment to a single physical interface.
Why do I show 2 IP addresses?
Using different IP addresses segmented based on particular mail streams is another legitimate reason for using multiple IP addresses. Since each IP address maintains its own deliverability reputation, segmenting each mail stream by IP address keeps the reputation of each mail stream separate.
Can one device have two IP addresses?
Of course it can. Although it is not at all recommended to assign multiple IP addresses on a computer until there are multiple network interface cards or NICs installed in it, you can still do so. The reason why it is not recommended to have multiple IP addresses on a single network adapter is to avoid the bottlenecks.
How can I tell if two IP addresses are on the same network?
When comparing two IP address/subnet combinations, the addresses must match for any section where the subnet value is 255. For a subnet of 255.255. 255.0, we expect to see the first three sections of the IP address match (reading left to right) if they are in the same subnet.
How many IP addresses should you have?
Many people walk around today with three or more IP addresses on their person. Your laptop computer, smartphone, tablet and eReader all have IP addresses if they connect to the Internet, so that’s four addresses right there.
Can two devices share the same MAC address?
If two devices have the same MAC Address (which occurs more often than network administrators would like), neither computer can communicate properly. Duplicate MAC Addresses separated by one or more routers is not a problem since the two devices won’t see each other and will use the router to communicate.
Why do I have two MAC addresses on my iPhone?
Apparently, Fing remembers all Mac addresses it has seen for a particular Router. It sort of keeps an image of all devices that have been previously connected to it. It seems here that it paired my iPhone device name with two different Mac addresses, my new current SE, and my old one ( the 4s). I used the exact device name for both.
What happens when a device has a MAC address?
When a device is connected, it always receives a specific IP address if it has a corresponding MAC address. MAC address filtering: networks can use MAC address filters, allowing only devices with specific MAC addresses to connect to the network.
What’s the difference between an IP address and MAC address?
While the IP address is logical and it can be changed by the network administrator, the MAC address is on the hardware and it is permanent. It is actually used for information exchange between computers on the local network.
When do you need a MAC address for a router?
In addition to the basic network usage, MAC addresses are often used for the following purposes: Static IP: Routers allow you to assign static IP addresses to computers. When a device is connected, it always receives a specific IP address if it has a corresponding MAC address.
