When should you turn outbound during a hold?
When holding at a VOR station, pilots should begin the turn to the outbound leg at the time of the first complete reversal of the “to-from” indicator. See GEN 3.4, Paragraph 12, Two-Way Radio Communications Failure, for holding at the approach fix when radio failure occurs.
When should a procedure not be turned?
The procedure turn or hold in lieu of procedure turn is a required maneuver. The procedure turn is not required when the symbol ‘No PT’ is shown, when RADAR VECTORING to the final approach course is provided, when conducting a timed approach, or when the procedure turn is not authorized.
Does a procedure turn count as a hold?
Flying a procedure turn shaped like a holding pattern is not holding. Ask ATC. If AT wanted you to enter a hold over the fix prior to the approach, they would tell you.
When should you start timing on a hold?
ICAO
- Enter the holding pattern at your planned holding speed.
- Start timing as you begin your first 180° turn, stop timing as your roll out.
- Double this time to establish your time to make a 360° turn.
- You can adjust outbound leg timing to nail the EFC, example follows.
Is a hold a procedure turn?
A holding pattern in lieu of procedure turn may be specified for course reversal in some procedures. In such cases, the holding pattern is established over an intermediate fix or a final approach fix.
What does the barb mean on a procedure turn?
barbed arrow
A procedure turn barbed arrow indicates the direction or side of the outbound course on which the procedure turn is made. Headings are provided for course reversal using the 45 degree procedure turn.
What to do when unable to obtain holding instructions?
If unable to obtain holding instructions prior to reaching the fix (due to frequency congestion, stuck microphone, etc.), then enter a standard pattern on the course on which the aircraft approached the fix and request further clearance as soon as possible.
The arrival holding pattern is not authorized unless assigned by ATC. “Cleared direct SECND, maintain at or above three thousand until SECND, cleared straight-in ILS Runway One-Eight approach.” Aircraft 1 can be cleared direct to XYZ VORTAC, or SECND because the intercept angle is 90 degrees or less.
What do you need to know about hold entry?
To understand the hold-entry procedures, you must first understand that the aircraft can approach the fix (direct track) from any direction, so the challenge rests with trying to figure out the initial turns that must be accomplished to end up tracking inbound on the assigned holding track (the inbound track).
What to do when you get a hold clearance?
When a hold clearance is received, the first reaction is an attempt to “visualize” how the hold looks on the map. Using a mental map, we attempt to place our aircraft relative to the assigned fix, and then draw how the hold will look—“If I approach from this track, I will cross the fix and steer a heading of . .
