What is the difference between ILS Z and ILS Y?
The Y uses an RNAV TAA to join the procedure and requires GPS. The Z uses conventional ground navaids to join the procedure and requires either DME or radar. The two procedures can’t be charted on the same chart because the Z has an MSA defined whereas the Y does not.
How do you know the direction of the runway?
Runways can be used in two opposite directions, and each direction is named with a two digit number based on the two different directions they face on a compass. Do all runways run north and south?

What is the difference between RNAV Y and RNAV Z?
The first one has the letter “Y” after the word “RNAV” and the second approach has the letter “Z” after the word “RNAV.” Because databases cannot handle duplicate file names, two approach procedures with the identical name to the same runway cannot be included in the database.
Is the ILS Category next to the runway?
Runway signs show the ILS category next to the runway designation. But if you flew and didn’t drive to the airport, you already know (hopefully). Either way, you are taking off, so you don’t really much care. One might say that you will have to land again in case of emergency, but ATC might not give you the same runway.
When to select the runway for take off and landing?
If the visibility and ceiling conditions are low, we recommend selecting a runway with an IFR precision approach available (like ILS). If you do not have a precision approach, select the runway with an IFR approach with the lowest minima. If the wind speed is high, we recommend selecting the runways with headwind.
Why do some airports have more than one ILS?
ATC will assign the correct approach. There are many different reasons some airports have multiple different ILS procedures for the same runway: Some procedures are limited to certain times of day, aircraft type or operator approval – in which case it is probably pretty obvious which one you should fly.
Can a runway be used without an IFR approach?
Choosing an active runway does not imply that this is the only one that can be used without any alternative. At some airfields, there is no IFR approach published for one or several runways, or an IFR approach is published only for one side of a runway.
